Anthropic launches Claude for Teachers — the classroom AI race intensifies. On July 14, Anthropic released a free version of Claude for verified US K-12 teachers, with lesson planning grounded in academic standards across all 50 states, FERPA-aligned data terms, and connectors into nine ed-tech platforms (MagicSchool, Canva Education, Diffit and others). A paid schools-and-districts product is “coming soon.” It lands alongside similar pushes from OpenAI and Google, and critics quoted by EdWeek warn about commercial tools shaping pedagogy. For school leaders everywhere — not just in the US — the signal is that free, capable teacher AI is now the default, so the live question is governance and training, not whether staff will use it.
EU AI Act enforcement for general-purpose AI goes live August 2. From August 2, 2026 the EU’s AI Office can compel documentation, evaluate models and impose fines on the general-purpose systems (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) that schools rely on. Obligations for “high-risk” education uses — assessment, admissions, proctoring — were pushed to December 2027 under May’s Digital Omnibus deal. Any school touching EU students or vendors should confirm its AI suppliers are moving to compliance now.
