What a Mind Never Does, It Never Builds

Part Two of Four. The first article argued that the honest question about AI in schools is when, not whether. This one sets out the mechanism that makes timing matter: what happens in a mind when effort is handed away — and why it matters more when the mind is still being built.

Cognitive offloading is not new, and it is not a vice. A shopping list is offloading. So is a diary, a knotted handkerchief, long division worked on paper. Psychologists define it as using action in the world to reduce the mental demands of a task, and human beings do it constantly, because it works. Nobody’s mind was ruined by a calendar.

What earlier technologies taught us

The research on earlier tools shows a consistent pattern. In a well-known series of experiments published in Science in 2011, Betsy Sparrow and colleagues found that when people expect information to remain available in a search engine, they remember the information itself less well — and remember instead where to find it. Work by Louisa Dahmani and Véronique Bohbot in 2020 found that heavier habitual GPS use was associated with poorer spatial memory when people had to navigate unaided. That finding is correlational, and it is honest to say so. But the direction of the whole literature is the same: what the tool reliably carries, the mind gradually stops carrying.

For an adult, this trade is usually rational. The adult offloads from a formed capacity. They learned to navigate, to spell, to hold an argument in their head, and the skill sits underneath the convenience. The tool extends them.

Why the same act is different in a child

A child offloads from a forming capacity, and that changes the arithmetic entirely. Decades of memory research converge on an uncomfortable truth: the effort is not an obstacle to learning, it is the mechanism of it. Retrieval that feels difficult is precisely what strengthens memory; the struggle of composing a first sentence is precisely what builds the ability to compose. Robert Bjork called these “desirable difficulties,” and they are among the most replicated findings in the science of learning.

The neural principle beneath this is simple to state. Capacities consolidate through use. The systems responsible for judgment, for weighing sources, for monitoring one’s own thinking, mature slowly — well into the mid-twenties. A mind under construction is built out of the cognitive work it actually performs. What a mind never does, it never builds.

What makes AI different in kind

Every earlier tool offloaded something bounded. The calculator carries arithmetic, but you must still know what to compute and whether the answer is plausible. A general language model has no such boundary. It can carry the planning, the retrieval, the structure, the phrasing and the judgment of a piece of work at once — the whole compositional act. The boundary of what gets offloaded is set only by the user’s restraint. And restraint, self-monitoring, the sense of which effort to keep — these are exactly the capacities that mature last.

The evidence we have, honestly

Direct evidence on AI is only beginning to arrive. In 2025, a team at the MIT Media Lab used EEG to compare essay writers working with a language model, with a search engine, or with nothing but their own minds. The unassisted writers showed the strongest and most distributed neural engagement; the AI-assisted group showed the weakest, remembered less of what they had written, and felt less ownership of it — and some of the difference persisted after the tool was taken away. The researchers called the pattern “cognitive debt.” The study was small, involved adults rather than children, and should be read as emerging rather than settled. But it points in the same direction as the older, stronger literature.

What this means for timing

Students will offload; that is not in question. The question for a school is which capacities have consolidated before they are offloaded. Offloading from strength extends a young person. Offloading in place of formation replaces something that was never built — and there is no later moment when it quietly builds itself. That is why the order matters more than the inventory, and why the first article insisted the real question is when.
