On reflection, the developing brain, and why The EdJournal built a toolkit.
Most schools adopt reflective practice in the classroom; it appears in character education frameworks, in pastoral curricula, in the language of wellbeing weeks and values days. Reflection is widely endorsed and thinly resourced; it is the practice we say matters and then leave, in large part, to chance.
What the evidence already settles
The pedagogical case for structured reflection is not contested. The Education Endowment Foundation’s Teaching and Learning Toolkit places metacognition and self-regulation among the highest-impact approaches available to schools, associated with around seven months of additional progress over a year when implemented well. The effect is stronger, not weaker, for disadvantaged students. Few interventions with this evidence profile cost so little to run.
The phrase that carries the weight, though, is when implemented well. The Toolkit’s headline figure describes a ceiling, not a guarantee. The same body of evidence is clear that poorly structured metacognitive work produces much smaller effects, and that the difference between the two is a matter of specific, teachable practice rather than teacher disposition or school resourcing.
This is the gap The EdJournal is interested in: not whether reflection works, which is settled, but what separates reflection that builds cognitive capacity from reflection that fills a timetable slot.
What the neuroscience adds
The cognitive science underneath the EEF finding is what makes the case genuinely interesting, and it reframes what reflective practice is for.
Metacognition, the capacity to monitor one’s own thinking, is not a fixed trait that students bring to school in greater or lesser quantities. It has a prolonged developmental trajectory. Sarah-Jayne Blakemore and colleagues at UCL have shown that metacognitive accuracy improves substantially between the ages of eleven and seventeen, even when underlying task performance remains stable. The capacity to know what you know, and to know when you do not, is still under construction across the entire span of secondary schooling.
The neural systems involved are now reasonably well mapped. Self-reflective work recruits the rostrolateral prefrontal cortex, associated with metacognitive monitoring; the medial prefrontal cortex, associated with self-evaluation; and the anterior cingulate cortex, associated with error detection. These regions undergo significant structural and functional refinement during adolescence. Reflective practice, on this account, is not asking students to deploy cognitive machinery they already possess. It is part of what builds the machinery.
A further finding deserves attention because it speaks directly to the affective dimension of reflection. Research by Van der Cruijsen and Crone has shown that across adolescence, the medial prefrontal cortex gradually integrates how young people see themselves with how they believe others see them. Self-concept consolidates through this integration. Reflective practice that asks students about their values, their relationships, and their sense of who they are is engaging this system at the precise developmental window in which it is most active.
None of this licenses overclaiming. The neuroscience does not tell teachers what to do on a Monday morning, and any resource that claims a direct line from a brain-imaging study to a classroom activity should be treated with caution. What the neuroscience does is explain why the pedagogical evidence looks the way it does, and in doing so it points to the conditions that make reflection effective.
Three conditions that follow
If reflection is a developmental capacity rather than a fixed skill, three implications follow for how schools should structure it.
The first is that brevity and repetition matter more than length. The neural systems involved in metacognition respond to spaced, repeated engagement rather than concentrated bursts. A ten-minute reflection returned to across a term builds more than a single one-hour session, in the same way that distributed practice outperforms massed practice across almost every domain of learning. The instinct to mark reflection with a long, special, one-off event runs against the grain of how the capacity develops.
The second is that the conditions for honest reflection are not soft preferences but functional prerequisites. Voluntary contribution matters because the threat response associated with compulsory disclosure compromises exactly the higher-order prefrontal processing that reflection depends on. Wait time matters because metacognitive monitoring takes longer than performance retrieval; the research on classroom wait time suggests teachers typically allow under one second, where the reflective task needs considerably more. Teacher modelling matters because the transfer of metacognitive language is supported by observation. These are not classroom-management niceties. They are part of the mechanism.
The third is that the affective themes of reflection carry cognitive weight. Resilience, belonging, forgiveness, purpose and the rest are routinely filed as pastoral concerns, adjacent to the real work of learning. The developmental neuroscience suggests this filing is mistaken. The systems that process self-concept and the systems that support metacognitive monitoring are neighbouring and interconnected. The affective and the cognitive are not separable layers of a school’s work. They are the same substrate.
Where the cards came from
The first resource in the EdJournal Toolkit, The Reflect Cards, began with eight words.
In the Mapparium in Boston, a stained-glass globe of the world that visitors stand inside, there is a display of eight values: resilience, joy, courage, generosity, compassion, gratitude, hope, and forgiveness. They are ordinary words. What was striking was how rarely they appear in the working vocabulary of school improvement. Not because schools do not value them, but because they sit outside the language that measurement systems are built around, and what cannot be easily measured tends to drift to the edges of what gets structured and resourced.
Our founder inspired, created The Reflect Cards; taking those eight values and adding four that the research consistently surfaces alongside them: kindness, empathy, purpose, and belonging. Twelve themes in total. Each card carries a single question a student returns to across a term or a year. The practice is deliberately short, because the evidence says short and repeated is what works.
The accompanying teaching pack is built around the three conditions above. It sets out a five-step lesson structure that works across four age bands from five to eighteen, an age-banded activity for every card, integration guidance for tutor time, subject lessons, and pastoral conversations, and the full research base behind every recommendation. It also includes explicit safeguarding guidance, because reflective writing can surface things students need adults to know, and a resource of this kind has a responsibility to say so plainly.
Why a toolkit
The Reflect Cards are the first resource in the EdJournal Toolkit, not the only one. The Toolkit exists because the gap between learning science and classroom practice is not closed by publishing research summaries. It is closed by translating evidence into things teachers can pick up and use without adding to their workload or asking them to learn a new system.
Every resource in the Toolkit will follow the same principles. Free for any school, anywhere. Grounded in evidence, with the evidence shown rather than gestured at. Designed to fit inside the structures schools already have, rather than demanding new ones.
Reflection is the practice schools most often endorse and least often structure. It is also, on the evidence, one of the most powerful things a school can do for the students who need it most. That combination, a high-value practice left to chance, is precisely the kind of gap The EdJournal exists to close.
The cards are a small thing. The capacity they help build is not.
