The UAE makes AI a compulsory subject, KG to Grade 12, starting this month. From the 2026 academic year now beginning, all UAE government schools and MoE-curriculum private schools must teach AI across seven strands — foundational concepts, data and algorithms, software, ethical awareness, real-world applications, innovation and project design, and policy and community engagement. Around 1,000 teachers have been trained. Two design choices matter more than the mandate itself: no additional timetable hours (AI is folded into the existing Computing, Creative Design and Innovation course) and no written exams, with assessment by applied project. For international schools anywhere, that is the most transferable part — it answers the two objections leaders raise most often, curriculum space and assessment load.
EU AI Act transparency obligations went live on 2 August, and they reach beyond Europe. Article 50 now requires AI systems that interact directly with people to disclose their artificial nature at first contact; generated content must carry machine-readable marking; deepfakes need a visible, human-readable label. Disclosure buried in terms and conditions is explicitly insufficient, and where children may use the system, the notice must be age-appropriate and accessible. Penalties run to €15 million or 3% of worldwide turnover. The obligations bite on non-EU providers whose outputs are used in the Union — relevant to any international school running an EU campus or licensing a US-built tool to European families. Separately, the Digital Omnibus deferred the high-risk education obligations (admissions, assessment, proctoring, progression decisions) from 2 August 2026 to 2 December 2027. Transparency now; the harder assessment rules later.
