Microsoft’s 2026 AI in Education Report signals the adoption debate is over — the support gap is the new problem. Released June 24, the report finds 58% of education leaders say their schools are already implementing or scaling AI, and a majority of leaders, educators, and students report their use rose over the past year. The headline ask is not more tools but training: 87% of educators and leaders say knowing how to use AI responsibly is now essential for students. For independent schools, the strategic question has shifted from “should we allow this” to “have we built the professional development and governance to use it well” — a board-level resourcing decision, not an IT one.
Parent pushback is becoming organised. Families packed a New York City Panel for Educational Policy meeting demanding the district pause AI deployments until its governance framework is finalised. Independent schools are not immune to this dynamic; it is a reminder to get ahead of parent communication before rollout, not after.
